An American news anchor made a live protest on air yesterday by refusing to break the story of Paris Hilton’s release from prison.
Hilton was released from prison in California at midnight on Tuesday

Mika Brzezinski, the co-host of MSNBC's weekday morning program Morning Joe, apologised to viewers before ripping her script up and screwing it into a ball.

Later, when her producer had insisted she led on the Hilton story in a later bulletin, Brzezinski tried to burn her script with a cigarette lighter, before standing up and putting it through a shredder.

“I have an apology for our lead story – I didn’t choose it,” the 40-year-old presenter said after her co-host, Joe Scarborough, asked her to read the morning headlines. “I hate this story and I don’t think it should be our lead. Take it and tear it to pieces.”

Mrs Brzezinski then borrowed a lighter from another co-presenter and tried to burn the pages before being constrained.

“Hold on a second, I’m going to make a point,” she retorted. “We’re not covering this. I won’t do it. Will you burn this for me please?”

When the show’s producer insisted on leading with the Hilton story in a subsequent bulletin, an irritated Mrs Brezeninski raised her voice and said: “I’m about to snap. I’ve ripped up the previous Paris Hilton story but they’re leading with it again.

“I don’t believe in covering this story, especially as the lead story in a newscast when you have a day like today.”

This was a reference to news that Republican Senator Richard Lugar had broken from President Bush on the Iraq war, a lead which Mrs Brezenski deemed as more newsworthy than the release of the 26-year-old blond hotel heiress after her three-week ordeal behind bars.

Mrs Brzezinski has now been labelled a hero in comments left on the video sharing website You Tube, where images of the bizarre scene have been uploaded and viewed more than 250,000 times.

One viewer, known as dkrupt, wrote: “about time someone had the balls to NOT talk about Paris...and that someone was a "chick".”

Hilton was released from prison in California at midnight on Tuesday after serving roughly half of her 45-day sentence for driving-related violations.
