LONDRA (Reuters) - Il primo ministro britannico Tony Blair è stato interrogato oggi dalla polizia, che sta indagando su un presunto giro di onorificenze pubbliche concesse dai partiti politici in cambio di prestiti. Lo ha reso noto oggi il suo portavoce.
"Il primo ministro ha parlato oggi con la polizia a Downing Street (sede del premier). Non c'è stata alcuna intimazione a comparire e non era accompagnato da un legale", ha detto il portavoce di Blair.
Il fatto che Blair sia stato interrogato senza aver ricevuto una preventiva intimazione significa che il primo ministro è stato sentito in qualità di testimone, non come possibile sospetto.
L'inchiesta di polizia è stata avviata dopo che lo Scottish National Party ha accusato il primo ministro di aver nominato membri della Camera Alta (la House of Lord, i cui membri non vengono eletti) facoltosi uomini d'affari in cambio di prestiti a favore del partito Labourista.
"Dato che lo SNP aveva fatto una denuncia specifica su persone nominate pari del regno dal primo ministro, era previsto che la polizia volesse ascoltarlo", ha detto ancora il portavoce, aggiungendo che la deposizione è durata tra un'ora e mezzo e due ore.
La polizia ha già ascoltato la maggior parte dei membri del gabinetto Blair nel 2005 nell'ambito dell'inchiesta e ha detto che spera di trasmettere le prove alla Procura a gennaio.
Gli investigatori vogliono sapere se i ministri erano a conoscenza che quattro ricchi uomini d'affari che hanno contribuito a finanziare la campagna elettorale del Labour nel 2005 sono stati nominati alla Camera Alta. Una legge del 1925 vieta la vendita di onorificenze di Stato.
Blair ha detto che sapeva di prestiti non dichiarati da parte di una serie di businessman che erano stati successivamente nella House of Lords, ma ha negato che ci fosse un legame tra le due cose.

As the cash-for-honours police inquiry encircles Tony Blair, speculation as to who will get the brief is reaching fever pitch. Like expectant MPs on the eve of a Cabinet reshuffle, business crime solicitors are fantasising about receiving that call from No 10.
Will the Prime Minister need a solicitor? It is not yet known whether he will be cautioned — that is, treated as a suspect, rather than a witness. But given his public acceptance for how Labour raised its funds, it seems likely he will need one either way. Moreover, to attend the interview alone given the investigation team’s alleged penchant for leaking would be dangerous.

But if the brief is not already made, how will the choice be made? Perhaps Cherie will have a quiet word with her Matrix colleague Clare Montgomery, QC. Poor Clare — if it comes out that she has helped to make the selection there will be hundreds of bruised egos among her instructing solicitors.

"Clare Montgomery, the 44-year-old QC who has faced fierce criticism for representing Chile's General Pinochet and the intelligence services, said: 'There is an important principle here. Both sides need to be well presented to resolve any legal dispute properly. The origin of this modern fad was a period when it was not thought respectable to represent suspected terrorists. Now it has completely turned around.'
She said she had come to human rights law after beginning her career as a commercial lawyer. The boom in human rights work, she felt, had been driven by an explosion in extradition cases concerning global terrorist net works and white collar crime. She now believes that the argument over what should happen to the British prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, represented by her Matrix colleague Nick Blake QC, is set to be one of the most important tests of human rights.
'I have always found the battle between the individual and the state completely gripping,' she said.

She represented Augusto Pinochet in the House of Lords, and led the challenge to the mutual assistance requests made in connection with Silvio Berlusconi’s business activities. She is a co-author (with fellow Matrix member Julian Knowles) of The Law of Extradition and Mutual Assistance (published by Cameron May, 2002).
